The East Africa Community and ASAL region Cabinet Secretary Peninah Malonza today toured Wajir County to assess the flood situation.

Malonzo was received by a team led by the county secretary Hillow Mumin and the Kenya Red Cross Society secretary Mr Ahmed.

Wajir is among the counties worst affected by the ongoing heavy rains which resulted in flash floods and destruction of properties.

Diif, Burder, Bute, Eldas and Buna Are among the areas worst affected by the floods.

Mr Mumin said the county government has so far evacuated households affected by floods to safe ground.

“We created awareness to the communities to use nets and move to high ground and also uncolloged all the drainage within the municipality,” he said.

Mumin said together with immunization of animals against Rift Valley fever and repairing of roads were some of the measures the county put in place to mitigate the effects of the floods.

Abdia Manya, Wajir County Red Cross Coordinator said they have registered almost 2,500 affected households and are in the process of delivering nonfood items to the affected areas.

Abdia also said some areas cannot be accessed because they have been submerged by the floods.
