Jill Biden's itinerary: US First Lady championing women's empowerment

U.S. First Lady Jill Biden has spiritedly begun her three-day State visit to Kenya.

Moments after meeting with First Lady Rachel Ruto at Nairobi's State House on Friday evening, Jill was off to meet and speak to a select group of women at the residence of U.S. Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman.

It was here that her speech captured the hearts of the invitees, as she challenged the women to work together and mentor the next generation of leaders.

"Women nurse, nurture, teach, hold, and lead the way forward. Women have been silenced for far too long...raising their voices has been a struggle, but your stories are inspirational," she told the crowd.

Jill, who is in Kenya on the invitation of Rachel echoed the United States' commitment to partner with Kenya to build better opportunities and a better future.

"When women get the opportunities they deserve, there's no limit to what we can do. When we come together to work against injustice, we can repair what's broken, and lift each other up when we fall," she said.

The First Lady took part in a women's empowerment reception with Whitman at her residence in Nairobi.

Part of her engagements while in Kenya center on empowering women and the youth, learning about the table banking programme, and addressing issues of food insecurity and drought in the Horn of Africa.

Though on her third visit to Kenya, this is her first official visit as First Lady of the United States, and sixth overall to Africa.

Tomorrow, Saturday, February 25, Dr Biden is scheduled for an entrepreneurship and sustainability event in the morning and a festival later in the afternoon.

She leaves Kenya for the U.S. on Sunday, February 26, 2023.
