Nightclub, dancing fountain to be constructed at Uhuru Park- Sakaja

You may soon experience ‘nightlife’ at the newly revamped Uhuru Park if Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s plans to put up a nightclub at the recreational park are successful.

Sakaja has announced plans for further renovation and construction at Uhuru Park, following its recent revamp by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

Speaking during the handover of Uhuru Park by Defense Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, the Nairobi County boss outlined upcoming projects, that include additional work, fully funded by the county government, which will be undertaken within the next nine months.

"There is approximately Sh500 million worth of work remaining at Uhuru Park. We are planning to construct a dancing fountain valued at Sh156 million, with the majority of funding coming from the County government," he said.

Additionally, the governor revealed intentions to invite investors to establish recreational amenities such as restaurants and nightclubs within the park.

"We will be issuing tenders for businesses here, including African restaurants and a nightclub," he stated. "This venue will provide an outlet for enjoyment without disturbing residential areas. The tendering process will be conducted transparently."

Sakaja stated the importance of relocating noisy nightlife establishments from residential neighborhoods.

In November 2022, City Hall revoked licenses for nightclubs operating in such areas and pledged not to grant permits for similar venues in the future.

Addressing concerns about park preservation, he urged the public to refrain from pollution and encroachment. "Anyone who has encroached upon the park should remove their structures voluntarily, as we will not hesitate to restore it," he warned.

Meanwhile, the City Park is slated to be transferred to the county government by the Kenya Forest Service (KFS).
