Is 'crazy' July weather normal?

Many parts of the country have been experiencing notable weather variations, with temperatures fluctuating from cold to warm within a single day.

The Kenya Meteorological Department assures the public that these fluctuations are part of normal daily weather patterns and are expected to persist until August. However, global drivers, including climate change, play a significant role in shaping these weather variations.

Dr Richard Muita assistant director climate services at Met Department provided insights into this phenomenon while referencing a seven-day weather forecast.

The scientist explained that the current weather variations observed majorly in Nairobi and the central region are within the normal range of daily temperature fluctuations.

“These variations are influenced by global factors, including climate change, which has altered weather patterns worldwide,” he says.

At the time of the interview with Planet Action, the seven-day weather forecast for July 11 to 17 indicated that rainfall was expected to continue over parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Coast, and the Rift Valley.

Additionally, relatively warmer temperatures were anticipated compared to the previous week. However, occasional cold and cloudy conditions were still to occur in certain areas such as the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, the Rift Valley, and the Highlands West of the Rift Valley.

“Climate change has disrupted traditional weather patterns, leading to increased variability and extremes,” Muita warned. “It is crucial to address climate change as a global issue and implement measures to mitigate its impacts.”

He added that it is essential for individuals and communities to adapt and prepare for these weather variations and proper planning, resource management, and awareness of climate resilience strategies are necessary.

“Understanding the interplay between normal daily weather variations and global influences allows us to make informed decisions and take appropriate actions to build a sustainable and resilient future for Kenya,”Muita said.
