Mitumbiri Sanitary Landfill in Muranga County that stalled two years ago is nearing completion.

The project stalled at 70 per cent complete and local leaders have been calling for its completion.

Water and Environment Executive Mary Magochi said the Sh1 billion project once complete will handle solid waste. The project was initiated by Nairobi Metropolitan Service led by Benjamin Njenga.

Magochi spoke when Deputy Governor Stephen Munania commissioned two refuse collection trucks and 21 bins procured at Sh46 million.

“Waste generated in Murang’a is estimated to be 390 metric tonnes daily,” said Magochi.

On private garbage collectors, she said, eight have been engaged by the county government to keep the environment clean.

She added that they will introduce regulations to deal with those who dump waste carelessly.

County Assembly Environment Committee chair Diana Kagiri said more garbage trucks will be bought to increase efficiency.
