Police shoot dead two armed suspects, recover guns in Lugari

Two armed suspects were killed yesterday during a shootout with police at Spring Park, near Turbo trading centre in Lugari sub-county, Kakamega county.

Police recovered an AK-47 rifle and several rounds of ammunition from the suspects.

Lugari sub-county police commander Bernad Ngungu told journalists that the suspects, who were riding on a motorcycle defied police orders to stop and instead, started shooting at the officers trailing the suspects from Matete.

"They are notorious criminal suspects linked to robbery incidents in Kakamega and Trans Nzoia counties. They were trailed from Mumias by security agents who lost them around Kipkaren centre at night but caught up with them later," said Mr Ngungu.

"They are the same culprits captured on CCTV cameras at various robbery scenes in this region, during festive they raided Shinyalu, Matete, Chimoi and Navakholo."

Elsewhere, police in Kakamega have arrested Boaz Lyati, linked to a house fire that killed seven family members at Runyenjes in Embu county on October 2, 2022.

Charles Kariuki, his wife Catherine Wanjiru, daughters Judith Wanjiku and Mary Ann Murugi and their son Joel Njeru all died in the blaze alongside Tumaini Blessing and Mbaraka.

Navakholo sub-county police commander Richard Omanga said the suspect was arrested by CID officers and escorted to Embu police station to help with the ongoing investigations.

Officers arrested Lyati at Buchangu primary school grounds where he was among hundreds of spectators watching a football match on Friday evening.

Bunyala Central MCA Benjamin Were hailed police for arresting the suspect.
