Security during Mashujaa Day celebrations assured

Security has been beefed up at Nairobi's Nyayo Stadium to ensure smooth Mashujaa Day celebrations, Regional Co-ordinator Njoroge Ndirangu has said.

Mr Njoroge pointed out that security officers were deployed prior to the celebrations and have been patrolling not only the venue of the celebrations, but also the central business district as well as surrounding estates.

Speaking at a Press briefing Monday, the co-ordinator asked everyone to co-operate with police and to report any suspicious individuals or activities.

"All persons and vehicles accessing Nyayo Stadium will undergo security checks. Guests should be seated by 9am but the gates to the stadium will be opened at 7am," he said.

He observed that President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is the chief guest at today's celebrations, is expected to arrive at 10am. The highlight of the celebrations, as Njoroge pointed out, is expected to be the President's address to the nation after being treated to an array of entertainment including choral music performed by private universities articulating the theme of the day. The President is expected to inspect a tri-service guard of honour when he arrives.
