David de Gea's latest clanger sees him fighting to retain his place as Manchester United's No.1 ahead of Dean Henderson's return from loan.

The Spaniard has become increasingly unreliable between the sticks for the Red Devils, and was at fault for Chelsea's second in their 3-1 win over United on Sunday.

Mistakes have become a recurring part of the once unbeatable goalkeeper's game, but De Gea has always had the odd error in him.

During the 2018 World Cup, De Gea gifted Cristiano Ronaldo a goal as Spain drew 3-3 with Portugal in Russia.

De Gea spoke out about the reaction to his mistake, explaining he was angry for the lack of support he was shown.

"Diego Costa has also been criticised and he scored two goals. I haven't killed anyone, either. I'm happy with the national team.

"I don't see much that they support me from Spain. My own criticism is bad enough.

"I would have liked that they defend me more in a difficult moment in my life, with an issue from outside the game. I am happy with the support from the manager and the lads.

"This can happen. It's a mistake. We put on our gloves and go out into the field and we know how difficult it is.

"I count on the support of the coach and my colleagues to continue. I will stay calm. It was a difficult ball, I'll keep training and try to do things right. I haven't killed anyone."

De Gea's comments suggest that the criticism that followed was rather more disruptive than constructive at a time when he needed a confidence boost.

Following De Gea's mistake in Man United's recent draw with Tottenham, Red Devils legend Roy Keane verbally destroyed the keeper with his analysis.

The Irishman claimed De Gea was overrated, saying he is "sick to death of him" and that he'd have been "throwing punches" at him had he been in the United dressing room.

He also claimed he'd have refused to let the Spaniard on the team bus after the match, and would have forced him to get a cab home from London on his own.

Considering De Gea's reaction to the 2018 criticism aimed at him, and the fact that he has made another error following Keane's recent outburst, then it is clear that he is very low on confidence currently.

Not only this, but Keane's words seem to have only provoked the situation, with De Gea in desperate need of a pick-me-up to turn things around.
