Former Arsenal defender announces retirement

Former Arsenal defender Phillipe Senderos has announced his retirement at the age of 34.

The defender made the announcement on his Instagram, thanking those who have supported him for the years he took to the pitch.

"I couldn't be more thankful for the blessings and opportunities I've had over the years," Senderos wrote on his Instagram.

Senderos also thanked his family and expressed optimism in the next chapter of his life.

"To my friends and amazing family, thank you a million times over. I look forward to the next chapter."

Senderos, whose last club was Swiss outfit FC Chiasso, moved to Arsenal as a teenager from Servette.

He made 116 appearances for the Gunners before joining Fulham then Valencia [Courtesy]

He made 116 appearances for the Gunners, with the highlight winning the FA Cup in 2005.

He then moved to Everton, then to Italian side AC Milan on loan deals, before settling at Fulham for four seasons after joining them in 2010.

For his international side, the Rossocrociati (Red Roses), Senderos won 57 caps scoring five goals.
