Nyeri-based physician Samwel Kiragu is the winner of the sixth edition of the Mashujaa Day charity golf tournament.

Kiragu, playing off handicap 10, shot an impressive round of 39 stableford points, amassing 19 stableford points on the outward nine and topping it up with 20 stableford points from the inward nines for his victory at the par 72 Nyeri Golf Club at the tournament sponsored by Mombasa Continental Resort.

The tournament is an initiative by former Central Bank governor Duncan Ndegwa to helps raise funds for the Nyeri Educational Trust and Ngangarithi Secondary School. It has benefited more than 2,000 students since its inception.

Ndegwa, an avid golfer who started playing 62 years ago while studying in Scotland, said there was a need to develop and nurture talent in the sport since it is the only generational game.

Nanyuki Sports Club’s Sam Muchuri, playing off handicap 21, was overall second on a score of 39 (21+18) stableford points. The club’d chairman, Gabriel Miungiu, playing off handicap 10, was overall third with 38 (21+17) stableford points.

John Mungai, playing off handicap 17, settled for men third on 37 (19+18) stableford points, while Engineer Kinoti of Nanyuki posted 37 (19+18) stableford points to take the men fourth prize.

Mercy Mburu returned a score of 32 (15+17) stableford points to claim the lady winner’s prize, while Wambui Kimathi, playing off handicap 33, was the lady runner-up with 30 (14+16) stableford points, edging out handicap 5 Stella Mwangi on countback 30 (17+13) stableford points.

Handicap 11 B. Inoti took the longest drive men’s prize as Flo Gathui, playing off handicap 18, claimed the longest drive prize in the ladies’ category.
