Kabras Sugar, Quins make Kenya Cup last four

Champions maintain dominance in battle for rugby glory

Champions Kabras Sugar and Kenya Harlequin have both qualified for this Saturday's Kenya Cup semifinals after seeing off their respective opponents at the weekend.

Kabras continued with their dominance over hosts Impala, beating them 21-18 in a repeat of last year's final at Impala Club to sail through as Quins survived a late scare from a determined Mwamba (32-31) to secure the last four ticket.

The millers will now battle with Homeboyz in what is expected to be an explosive semifinal encounter at Jamhuri Park on Saturday.

The other equally exciting semis will see Quins travel to Ruaraka for a clash against former champions Kenya Commercial Bank at the Lions' Den.

Despite qualifying for their third consecutive semis, Kabras deputy coach Anthony Ogot said the victory didn't come easily.

"The boys played as per instructions and their fighting spirit was close to none. But what won us the game, was character and composure," Ogot told Feverpitch.

Commenting on their next game against Homeboyz, the former Kenyan international said: "It is going to be a very difficult match for both teams, but we will handle them as they come.

"Unlike us, Homeboyz had enough resting period and they even came to watch our game, but that shouldn't be a problem as we are also going to make good use of our four recovery days."

Kabras got their two tries through Hillary Mwanjilwa and Edwin Achayo with Fijian Jone Kubu adding three penalties and a conversion while George Okowa scored two tries and two penalties for Impala.

In the other see-saw quarterfinal match at the neighbouring RFUEA Grounds, Mwamba's George Mutuku missed a crucial conversion and a penalty late in the game to gift Kenya Harlequin a slim 32-31 victory.

Wilson K'Opondo, Patrice Agunda, Brian Okwomi, Peter Misango and Joseph Kang'ethe scored a try each for Quins to return to the semis after three years.
