Former Kenya Cup side Kisumu Rugby Club will host newbies Shamas today at Kisumu Polytechnic grounds as the KRU Championship returns after more than 19 months.

There are six matches on the card this weekend.

Kisumu was relegated from the Kenya Cup in February last year after finishing bottom in the log alongside Western Bulls and they will both be hoping to secure a return to the top tier league.

Bulls will entertain another newly promoted side Kabarak University at the Bull Ring.

Both Shamas and Kabarak were promoted to the second-tier league after reaching the finals of the KRU Nationwide League which Shamas won.

The return of the Championship elicits excitement for clubs, players and coaches who use the league as a stepping stone to Kenya Cup action.

Mean Machine who missed out on Kenya Cup promotion will be hoping to make a strong start to the season with a win against Catholic Monks.
