Police in Nandi are holding a 21-year-old man accused of killing two women in a hit-and-run incident between Namgoi Market and Kapsabet town.
Three other people were injured in the Saturday accident.
The suspect, Patrick Rono, allegedly was on the run after hitting a boda boda rider.
According to the witnesses, Rono was driving a Toyota Probox and was heading towards Eldoret.
"He was being trailed by enraged bodaboda riders. He drove erratically while evading the road users along the way. Unfortunately, he veered off the road within Kapsabet town and hit the pedestrians," said Shadrack Mutai.
He said the driver veered off the road to avoid a head-on collision with a lorry.
Nandi central OCPD Doris Chemos said the victims suffered injuries on their heads and legs.
"The deceased succumbed to their injuries. The three were taken to hospital and were discharged," she said.
Chemos said the driver was taken to Kapsabet central police station.
His family claim that Rono is suffering from mental illness.
"The suspect is being interrogated. The relatives, who are residents of Kapsabet, said that he was under medication. He drove out of the compound without anyone's knowledge and caused accidents," she said.
The bodies were taken to the Kapsabet County referral hospital morgue, pending identification by their respective families.
