DP Ruto and family distribute Christmas goodies to children's homes, villagers

As many Kenyans streamed supermarkets to shop ahead of Christmas, representatives of orphanages were at Deputy President William Ruto's home where they were given foodstuff.

Ruto's Sugoi home in Uasin Gishu was a beehive of activity on Monday as the DP and his wife Rechel distributed food to children's homes and disadvantaged families.

The DP and his family had invited several groups and individuals with whom they celebrated early Christmas.

Besides food items such as wheat flour, sugar and rice, the DP also slaughtered a goat, which they feasted on.

Song and dance

A group of children from orphanages in Eldoret led in song and dance at the home.

Ruto used the function to heap praise on individuals who had taken it upon themselves to take care of street children and those who had been neglected by their families.

"We are grateful to you for the special role you continue to play in taking care of the children," said Ruto.

He challenged families to set good examples by welcoming destitute children and sharing with them during the festive season.

Extra bedrooms

"For those who are blessed with homes or those with extra bedrooms and a seat at your dining table, give the children a chance to be in your homes. Those not living with their parents should find their way into our homes so they can enjoy the warmth of a family," said Ruto.

He added: "We have a small population of less than 2,000 children in orphanages. I am optimistic a day will come when we shall see many destitute children being part of our families."

Rachel commended organisations that take care of destitute children, saying: "It is not an easy task. You have faced many challenges bringing up these children. Sometimes you wonder where to get food for them. I urge you to continue and you will be rewarded."
