Laikipia East MP Anthony Mutahi Kimaru yesterday escaped death narrowly when he was involved in an accident in Nanyuki town.
Mr Kimaru was driving home from a party in his Toyota Landcruiser VX when he hit a boulder on the roadside. The first time MP had three passengers in the vehicle, one who sustained injuries.
Speaking from his Nanyuki Cottage Hospital bed, Kimaru said he suffered a cracked rib and some other minor injuries.
“I was driving home around 3am from a graduation party for my sister, and as I approached the Majengo-Nanyuki market junction, a bodaboda cyclist emerged and as I swerved to avoid hitting him, the vehicle plunged into a ditch” he said.
Chest pains
The MP was driving home during the dawn incident. Neighbours took the MP and other victims to Cottage Hospital, where he was admitted.
When The Standard on Sunday visited him at Cottage Hospital, the MP was stable, although medics said he will be hospitalised for more observation. He however complained of chest pains from the multiple bruises.
“I feel I’m okay. I’m having difficulties when rising from the bed, but I am able to move,” he said.
Medics said the MP will be referred to a hospital in Nairobi if his condition deteriorates. Kimaru, a former high school Principal, said two other passengers escaped unhurt.
He termed the incident as a normal accident and absolved the motorcyclist from blame. “We should not blame them. Its just an accident like any other and it can happen to any person,” he said.
When we visited the hospital, we found tens of people, including his constituents, waiting to be cleared to visit the MP in hospital.
Among those who visited him was Laikipia County Government Education, ICT and Youth Executive Secretary Mr John Bosco Akaale.
