Con woman arrested, targets bank clients

A woman suspected to have been fleecing bank clients of their money was arrested in Eldoret after a spirited chase.

The woman is said to have been targeting unsuspecting clients, mostly high school students depositing school fees in banks.

Her arrest followed several complaints from clients to the police that they had been conned while transacting bank business in Eldoret.

“We did not believe them because they complained that bank employees had conned them,” said a security officer manning a bank.

Thursday, however, she was caught after a student raised the alarm as she attempted to con her.

The victim, a high school student, said the woman introduced herself as an employee of the bank and offered to assist deposit her school fees money. “She offered to assist me and I accepted because of the long queue at the bank,” said the victim.

The student raised the alarm after she realised the woman had disappeared with the money.

Police recovered ATM cards, mobile phones and an unknown amount of money. Business came to a standstill at the bank as workers and clients gathered outside the bank to catch a glimpse of the woman.

Meanwhile, a foreign journalist mistaken for German Ahmed Khaled Mueller, a terror suspect, was arrested in Eldoret town.

The suspect was, however, released after the police established his identity.

Uasin Gishu Deputy OCPD Charles Mutua confirmed the incident and said the journalist had been on assignment from Iten to Nairobi.

“We set him free after we established that he was an American journalist on assignment not the most wanted German terror suspect,” Mutua told The Standard.

He was arrested by members of the public him as he boarded a bus destined for Nairobi and handed over to the police.
