Hosts shine during Maseno Open tournament

Home ground support steered hosts Maseno School to the finals of Maseno Open tournament. Maseno beat Kakamega High School 12-5 to retain the trophy, formerly Amadi Sevens, in an event that attracted more than 200 schools at the weekend.

In the plate finals, Mundika beat Agoro-Sare 12-10 to win, while Sameta High School silenced Malava 24-0 in the Shield finals.

To qualify for the finals, Malava had defeated Coidenel 17 -10, while Sameta had thrashed Nairobi School 14 -7.

In the Plate semis, Agoro-Sare beat Otieno Oyoo High 18-0, while Mundika hit Homa Bay High School 14 - 12.

In the main cup semis, Maseno thrashed Musingu 17 -0, while Kakamega beat St. Mary’s Yala 12-7.

In football, Cornelius Mukaya’s seventh minute solitary goal was enough to see Maseno University past Ingotse in the finals to lift the Maseno Open tournament title.

Langa’ta High School, who have won the championship for the last three years, were ejected by Maseno University with a 4-0 thrashing in the semis.

Two penalty shots

Maseno University’s Collins Mukaya scored two penalties in the 15th and 47th minute before Roland Omino scored the third in the 54th minute before Kennedy Achanja made it 4-0 in the 70th minute.

In the second semis, Ingotsi High defeated Ambira 3-2 in post-match penalties after playing to a barren draw in regular and extra time.

Collins Odao and Boniface Osoro, both of Ambira should have themselves to blame for shooting their spot kicks wide. Owen Otieno and John Wander scored the two goals for Ambira, while Ingotse scorers were Clause Masiko, Omar Boe and Ali Hassan. Victor Matete sent his wide.

Maseno School principal Paul Otula, who is also the school basketball coach, thanked the schools that participated in the event.

The host’s games master Franklin Odayo said that they were pleased with the turn out in the event sponsored by Brookside Dairies and Nairobi Sports House.
