Protests over Cholmondeley sentence

The eight months sentence handed down to Lord Delamere’s grandson, Mr Tom Cholmondeley has been received with anger and protests in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.

Family of slain Kenya Wildlife Service ranger, Mr Samson Ole Sisina, took issue with the decision, saying it was too lenient.

"It (the sentence) has sent a very wrong signal across the country. People were expecting the court to give a stiffer sentence given the manner in which this man has been trigger happy…killing people around," the family’s advocate, Mr Martin Ole Kamwaro said.

The family’s advocate, Mr Martin Ole Kamwaro demanded justice, saying they also "want our day in court."

"Does it mean the life of (Robert) Njoya is more important than Sisina’s? Sisina was not a trespasser. The life of a Maasai is more important than that of a wild animal," Kamwaro told journalists.

Before the judge could step out of the courtroom, protesters unfurled placards, some of them reading: "The butcher of Naivasha" and "Killed Two dogs, Njoya and ole Sisina."
