Motorists attacked in Turkana by suspected highway robbers

Lodwar, Kenya: A driver ferrying petroleum was on Tuesday shot and injured by suspected highway robbers at Kainuk, along the Kapenguria-Lodwar highway.

The attackers, estimated to be six in number emerged from a dense thicket and flagged down the tanker, after robbing other motorists on the same route.

The victim, Ben Muiruri, who was heading towards Lokichar aboard the tanker was accosted about one kilometre away from Kainuk police station.

The incident took place at about 1pm Tuesday.

"We were alerted of the robbers by passengers in a saloon vehicle that was heading in the opposite direction. The attackers ordered them out of the vehicle, and robbed them of valuables as they lay on their stomachs," narrated Muiruri.

HEAVILY ARMED

He was rushed to Kainuk health centre by a good Samaritan, who had one security officer aboard.

Muiruri said the armed security officer shot in the air and managed to scare the attackers away.
