DCI seeks to detain MCA Grace Nduta over alleged Koimburi abduction

Kanyenya-ini MCA Grace City Nduta. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) now wants Kanyenyaini Ward MCA Grace Nduta, Juja CDF Chairman Peter Kiratu, and two others detained in custody for 15 days pending probe into connection with the alleged staged abduction of MP George Koimburi. In an affidavit presented before the Milimani Law Courts, Chief Inspector Nicholas Njoroge of the DCI Headquarters Operations Support Unit, alleged that MCA Nduta, Kiratu, alongside David Macharia Gatana and Cyrus Kieru Muhia, orchestrated the kidnapping of the MP "with the intent to murder," and misled police by providing false information about the incident. "The respondents were arrested on May 28, 2025, and are being held at Capitol Hill, Industrial Area, and Muthaiga Police Stations in connection with kidnapping in order to murder, creating a disturbance, and giving false information to a public officer," the affidavit states. Inspector Njoroge has urged the Magistrate Caroline Nyanguthii Mugo to allow them to continue holding the suspects to remain in custody while investigations are finalized. "The allegations are serious, involving a sitting Member of Parliament, and the motive behind the alleged abduction remains unclear," he noted. The case was first reported by Kiratu on May 25 at Mugutha Police Station. The court heard that Kiratu in the report to the police claims that MP Koimburi had been abducted by two unknown men who has their faces concealed in blue masks and driven away in a Subaru Forester shortly after attending a church service at the Full Gospel Ebenezer Church in Muguth which has ended at 1400 hours and his whereabouts remain unknown. "Koimburi was reportedly bundled into a vehicle, registration KDQ 803B, which upon investigation was revealed to be KDG 803B a car registered to the third respondent, Cyrus Kieru," Njoroge told the court. The officer added that following the report, police swiftly responded by visiting the said scene, where confirmed from the church management and other witnesses that the same had also been captured by the CCTV cameras installed at the church premises. At the same time, the matter quickly gained public attention, with amateur videos circulating online showing the alleged kidnapping, causing panic among the MP's constituents and fellow lawmakers. "Immediately after the alleged abduction, amateur videos went viral on various social media platforms in the country, creating a lot of panic among his colleague, Members of Parliament, family, friends, and the General public," Njoroge stated. However, preliminary investigations contradicted Kiratu's report. According to the DCI detective, MP Koimburi had evaded arrest just two days earlier at a public function in Gachororo Primary School after learning DCI officers were present. He abandoned his Toyota Prado and driver before fleeing on a motorcycle. "Previously on the May 23, 2025, Hon. George Koimburi who had another function for the distribution of Bursary funds to his contituents at Gachororo Primary School within Juja Constituency, successfully evaded his arrest with the help of an unknown Motorcycle rider leaving behind his vehicle and the driver after he got wind that DCI officers were present in the function to effect his arrest," Njoroge said. The court heard that the MP thereafter switched off his known phone numbers and subsequently the driver was arrested and escorted to DCI Headquarters together with the said vehicle registration number KDQ 854J make Toyota Prado, black in colour that remains at the DCI Yard for safe custody to date. The officer added that Koimburi's driver was interviewed and his statement recorded before he was released the same day without any charges. The DCI confirms that the MP's intended arrest on May 23, 2025, was in connection with a land fraud case involving parcel RUIRU EAST/JUJA BLOCK2/76796 following a directive by the DPP to charge him with various criminal charges. According to a letter from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) dated May 20, Koimburi was to be charged with obtaining registration by false pretence, conspiracy to defraud, forgery, and uttering false documents. "After evading arrest, he returned to his home, where he was visited by the Juja CDF Chairman. He even discussed legal plans to retrieve his car, still held by the DCI," reads the affidavit. The officer stated that police are yet to obtain a medical report and record a statement from MP Koimburi since he is in a critical condition in hospital. "Efforts by investigators to interview or obtain a statement from the victim(MP Koimburi) have failed, as the hospital maintains he is not fit for questioning," Njoroge stated Njoroge emphasized the need to continue holding the suspects, arguing that releasing them would likely interfere with investigations. "The matter has caused fear and political tension in Juja, a cosmopolitan constituency. There's potential risk to public order," he said. He added that the suspects' electronic gadgets have been seized and require forensic analysis. Additionally, "there are leads suggesting involvement of other unidentified suspects, and releasing these individuals could jeopardize ongoing efforts." The DCI urged the suspects to be denied bail, raising concerns for the safety of the suspects themselves, citing public outrage. "It is in the interest of justice, peace, and their personal safety that they remain in custody," the officer insisted. The suspects, however, opposed the DCI's application and urged the court to release them on bail, arguing that the state's request is ill-motivated and amounts to a political witch-hunt. They told the court that they are willing to cooperate with the investigation and comply with any conditions set by the court.
