A woman charged with stealing a phone claims a police officer raped her while in custody.

The 38-year-old suspect told a Nakuru court the officer raped her at the Pinewood Police Post.

The woman was arrested at Flamingo Estate on Sunday evening over claims she stole a Samsung Galaxy phone and cash, all valued at Sh23,548, from Irene Nanjala on July 29. She denied the charges.

The woman told Senior Principal Magistrate Peter Ndege the officer also injured her. “There were two officers at the station. One of them left, the other remained behind and started to beat me after I refused his sexual advances,” she claimed.

The woman claimed she had difficulties sitting and walking, alleging that her efforts to launch a complaint against the officer at Central Police Station were futile.

“I was told I was lying and that the injuries I sustained were as a result of mob justice, which is not true. The injuries I have is on my buttocks only, which was caused by the officer,” she added.

The magistrate ordered the Central OCS to make a report on the nature of the injuries. “The accused is to be taken for medical examination and treatment as the OCS prepares a report concerning the allegations,” the court ordered.

The woman was released on a bond of Sh40,000 or alternative cash bail of Sh15,000. The case continues tomorrow.
