Slain National Lands Commission (NLC) official Jennifer Wambua will be laid to rest today at her Machakos home. Wambua’s funeral service was held at the Machakos Golf Club.
The former NLC Deputy Director of Communication, who previously served as the Kenya News Agency bureau chief in Machakos, disappeared four days before she was to take the stand as a star witness in a corruption case.
She was to testify on March 17 at the Milimani Law Courts in a case in which Lugari MP Ayub Savula, former Ministry of Information PS Sammy Itemere, Dennis Chebitwey, and others were being charged with stealing Sh122,335,500 from the Government Advertising Agency (GAA).
Before her disappearance, Wambua had failed to appear in court for cross-examination twice; the first time through sickness, and the second due to her unavailability. While citing the two incidents, Milimani Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi said he was saddened by the killing and ordered the case to be heard in a physical court.
Wambua’s body was found by herdsmen in Kerarapon, Ngong forest, and moved to City Mortuary where it was eventually identified on March 13, three days after she went missing from her workplace in ACK Annex.
After the body had been identified, Makueni MP and family friend, Dan Maanzo, told the media, “She died a very cruel death. She has a lot of injuries on her body, from her legs to the shoulder.”
A week before she was killed, Wambua was involved in a road accident on her way to Nairobi from Machakos after her car collided with a lorry. She escaped with minor injuries.
