NAIROBI, KENYA: A number of matatu operators are seeking to reduce fares until the political stalemate in the country is resolved. They also want the national government to regulate fuel prices so they can achieve lower fares.

The Association of Matatu Operators on Wednesday said the current political climate had translated to losses for residents and urged its members to reduce fares until the situation improved.

“Since the formation of our organisation, business has been low due to the political atmosphere in the country, which has led to the decline in business. We are urging our members to reduce fares for our customers during this difficult time,” said Jimal Ibrahim, chairman of the association.

If they are successful, Eastlands residents (most vehicles ply this route) will pay less to get to their respective destinations.

Through a statement, Mr Ibrahim also faulted the recent move by the Energy Regulatory Commission to hike fuel prices to Sh102.70 for petrol, Sh92.4 for diesel and Sh71.23 for kerosene, and urged that these prices should be reviewed downwards.

“The Government should regulate fuel prices as this will enable us to pass the benefit to our customers,” he said.

Political climate

Ibrahim further noted that there had been an upsurge in crime across the city owing to the political climate. He said demonstrations had become order of the day and a few people were taking advantage of this to wreak havoc and steal from businesses.

He called on Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome to intervene and ensure that their businesses were protected.

The newly-formed association said it had trouble adhering to Governor Mike Sonko’s directive to self-regulate due to ‘sabotage’ by rival associations.

“We have managed to reduce the traffic jams but are experiencing difficulties on Accra Road, Latema and Temple roads," he said.
