Why rethink 14-seat matatu phaseout before it’s effected?

Co-operatives minister Joseph Nyagah is obviously a hardworking and conscientious public servant, with a solid resume to back up his achievements. But his pledge to ensure the 14-seater matatu phase-out is rescinded cannot be counted as another notch on his totem pole.

When Cabinet approved the now ubiquitous matatu to solve the fast-growing Nairobi city transport woes in the early 1970s, it was a brilliant plan then. The matatu has served the city and the rest of the country faithfully during the intervening period.
