Meet man running Imara, Embakasi mkokoteni boutique

31st July, 2018

Ben Mwiti survived the Garissa University College attack that killed 148 and left 79 others injured. At the time of the attack, Mwiti, 27, was a first-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree.

By night, he was a city businessman hawking second-hand and new clothes.

“I started selling clothes in 2013 after high school while waiting to join university. I began with a few clothes from Gikomba and Eastleigh. I realised the money was good and I’ve never stopped,” he said.

Mwiti says his mobile boutique around Imara Diama and Embakasi areas heals his emotional and physical scars from the April 2, 2015 attack.

“Having been in the business of hawking for long, I created my mobile boutique, which is basically a mkokoteni full of women’s clothes,” Mwiti who is yet to graduate told CityBiz.

His cart comes complete with name of the shop and contact information.

He adds that: “I bought the cart for Sh3,000 and pimped it with special wheels to make it this special.”

Mwiti’s boutique dubed ‘The Hidden Secret’ specialises in women’s clothes because “women love shopping for new things, but a man can survive on one pair of trouser for five years!”

On a daily basis, Mwiti walks for three to seven kilometres looking for customers and in the evening, the mobile shop is closed and parked at his house.

The mobile boutique can contain second hand clothes worth Sh40,000; with prices ranging from Sh200 to Sh1,200.

The cart is fitted with a mirror for clients.

Mwiti claims that some envious people are not happy with his business but “having cheated death, I choose to be happy. Besides, I understand the potential of this business.”
