Voting underway at London Ward in Nakuru town west constituency

4th March, 2021

Voting at a majority of the seven polling stations in London ward began at 6:15am recording slow turnout which is gradually growing. The residents had started queueing as early as quarter to six to elect their next MCA following the death of the former office holder Samuel Mbugua in November last year. The electoral body, IEBC has merged most of the polling stations for the by-election. To ease the verification process for voters at the respective stations, the IEBC has mounted a copy of the voters register at the entrances. The London by-election has high stakes that despite being a ward level contest it has attracted much attention from national leaders. 20 candidates are on the ballot paper, 16 of them affiliated to different political parties and four independent candidates. Two candidates however withdrew their candidature last week, ODM and Kanu in favour of Jubilee candidate though IEBC said it was too late to have their names removed from the ballot papers. The high stakes have risen as the Jubilee Party seeks to assert itself as the supremo party in the area. On the other hand, splinter faction which is behind United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is seeking to establish itself in the county. The ward has a total of 18,380 registered voters whose turnout is expected at 50 percent in the 29 polling stations spread across 7 centers. Milimani Primary School is the largest in terms of registered voters at over 4,300.
