Tanzania election turns bloody amid reports of police brutality and voter crackdown

3rd November, 2025

The East African region has maintained silence following Tanzania’s controversial election, which was marred by chaos and vandalism of election materials. More than 24 hours after President Samia Suluhu Hassan was declared the winner, regional leaders and the East African Community have yet to issue any statements.

As of Sunday evening, only African Union Commission Chairperson Mohamoud Youssouf had sent a congratulatory message to President Suluhu, while EAC member states and their heads of government have notably avoided commenting on the outcome.
