The Kenya Navy has intercepted a ship carrying narcotics valued at more than KSh 8.2 billion in a major anti-drug operation off the coast of Mombasa.
According to security officials, the vessel was stopped about 630 kilometres east of Mombasa in the Indian Ocean during a joint operation involving the Kenya Navy, the Kenya Coast Guard Service, and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
On board were six Iranian nationals, who were arrested and handed over to authorities for interrogation. The stateless vessel was found carrying 769 packages of a crystalline substance suspected to be methamphetamine, weighing over one tonne. Preliminary tests confirmed the drugs’ authenticity.
