The family of 12-year-old Kennedy Onyango, believed to be the youngest victim killed during Kenya’s 2024 anti-tax protests, is demanding a personal apology from President William Ruto, saying compensation alone cannot bring them closure.
Their call comes even as the government begins implementing a compensation programme for victims of police brutality and violence linked to the Gen Z-led demonstrations.
According to the family, true healing can only begin when the President meets them face to face and acknowledges the loss of their son. They insist that a public statement from a podium is not enough.
Kennedy was fatally shot in Rongai while reportedly on his way to collect a book from a neighbour during the protests that rocked the country in June 2024.
His family says the pain of losing him remains fresh and that accountability, recognition and a personal apology are just as important as financial compensation.
The government recently acknowledged that serious human rights violations occurred during the protests and has initiated a compensation process for affected families and survivors.
