Gen-Zs react to failed fuel protests, saying street demos are losing meaning and impact

22nd April, 2026

Planned nationwide protests over rising fuel prices and the soaring cost of living recorded a lower turnout than expected today, with many Kenyans choosing to stay away from the demonstrations. The subdued response has sparked fresh debate on whether street protests are losing momentum despite growing economic pressure on households across the country.

Many young Kenyans said they are increasingly skeptical about repeated demonstrations, arguing that past protests have delivered little tangible change. Some expressed frustration with recurring calls to take to the streets, saying they now prefer alternative approaches that can produce lasting solutions to the country’s economic challenges.
