Economic hardship dampens festive travel rush

The weekend before Christmas is usually marked by travel chaos and festive excitement, but this year the mood is markedly different as tough economic conditions dampen holiday plans.

At Nairobi’s Country Bus Station, the familiar festive roar has faded to a whisper, with fewer travellers heading upcountry. Those who can still afford the journey are paying a heavy price, spending up to seven hours stuck in traffic along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru highway.

Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has blamed the massive gridlock on driver indiscipline, as motorists ignore traffic rules in a rush to beat the holiday travel rush.
