Deteriorating state continues between police force and civilians after shoot at protestors directive

15th July, 2025

Kenya is in the grip of a deepening crisis between the state and its citizens following President William Ruto’s unprecedented directive that security forces shoot protestors in the leg if they damage property ostensibly to incapacitate rather than kill. This hardline stance comes in the aftermath of Saba Saba Day protests on July 7, during which 31 people were killed, marking the deadliest day in a wave of unrest that has now resulted in over 50 fatalities in just two weeks.
