Vet calls for relocation of unsafe abattoir

Embu,Kenya:Veterinary officials have recommended the relocation of a slaughterhouse in Ishiara Market, Mbeere North district in Embu County, saying it was a health hazard and posed danger to residents.

They said the slaughterhouse, which is situated inside the market and close to residential houses, undermined the safety of the residents in the event an animal went wild.

Ivurore Division veterinary officer Agapio Njue said a slaughterhouse was supposed to be erected on at least one-and-a-half acres and be over one kilometre away from the main market to avoid human-animal conflict and allow for proper waste disposal.

Speaking to the Press outside the slaughterhouse, Njue said the premises were dilapidated and occupied less than a quarter of an acre, which would not allow for expansion.

He said a private investor in the area had constructed a better facility about two kilometres from the market but the traders were reluctant to use it. “We want to ensure that the community’s interests are protected. A slaughterhouse must be at least one-and-a-half kilometres away to boost disease control. What would happen if an animal became wild?” posed Njue.

David Mwenda, a butcher, said animal waste was left in the compound for a long time before being removed, thus posing a major health risk.
