Former governor dragged to court over child upkeep

NEWS

While serving as an employee of the Africa Development Bank AfDB in Uganda, former Trans-Nzoia governor Patrick Khaemba reportedly got into a romantic relationship with a native, a relationship which has now landed him in trouble. The union between Khaemba and Kampala-based businesswoman led to the birth of a minor named GA, aged nine. The businesswoman has however dragged the former governor to court over the neglect of the child.

The relationship between the duo, according to a court document, was between 2011 and 2013. In an affidavit, she claims she cohabited with Khaemba both in Kampala, Uganda, and Trans Nzoia County, Kenya. Out of the union, the two were blessed with a girl. Khaemba served as the first governor of Trans Nzoia County in 2013 and was re-elected in 2017.According to court documents filed by the businesswoman, after the child was born in 2013, the former governor refused to provide for her upkeep. She is now seeking the help of the court to order Khaemba to pay Sh236,000 per month for the maintenance and upkeep of the child pending the hearing and determination of the suit.Through lawyer John Bororio, the Kampala-based businesswoman claims that since 2013, she has been reaching the Khaemba to contribute towards the child's maintenance and upkeep, but he has been giving empty promises.

Sh236,000 per month

The woman alleges the former county chief has failed to provide money for the treatment of the child suffering from gastrointestinal disease. The businesswoman who runs a cosmetics and beauty business says that she lives in a rental house for which she pays Sh146,000 and Sh20,000 for water and electricity. The minor is attending a Christian private school in Kampala.

She argues that her business is not doing well since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020 and has been unable to provide for the child singlehandedly. In her pleadings, she argued that the retired county chief is a man of means and should take the role of providing for the child.

She pleads with the court to award her actual and legal custody of the child and order the respondent to maintain and provide for the said child.Out of the Sh236,000, Sh146,000 will be for rent, and Sh20,000 for water and electricity while Sh50,000 for food and Sh20,000 for entertainment. The former governor has been summoned to appear before Kitale resident Magistrate Tobias Onono. Bororio told The Nairobian that the respondent is seeking an out-of-court settlement."My client is ready for a round table talk," Bororio said during an interview.
