Roads Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is urging an end to the marginalisation of women in the allocation of public tenders, particularly within the construction industry.
He noted that women have been unfairly excluded from lucrative contracts due to corruption and nepotism within the procurement process.
"The government acknowledges the importance of workplace diversity, and greater representation of women is expected to significantly benefit both the industry and the broader economy," said Murkomen.
Speaking during Women in Construction forum in Nairobi on Monday, August 14, aimed at empowering and promoting women in the construction sector, Murkomen called on government ministries to allocate a minimum of 50 per cent of their tenders to women, youth, and individuals with disabilities.
He also commended the valuable contributions of women to the growth of the construction industry, saying that they have infused their expertise, experience, and technical knowledge into various disciplines.
Murkomen noted only 3 per cent of construction artisans are women, identifying this as a challenge that requires attention.
"The progress we are currently witnessing in the construction industry is a direct outcome of women’s participation. It is essential to provide them with increased support and create additional opportunities," he added.
