Kagicha and team keep walking in Johnnie Walker ties

Joseph Kagicha, Irene Kimeu, Ronald Wekesa, and Ibrahim Lande continue celebrating their new year after returning a combined score of 117 points to emerge the overall winners of the fifth leg of the Road to Gleneagles Johnnie Walker Golf Series.

The tournament, which was at the Railways Golf Club on Saturday, was a day-long 18-hole event that attracted 140 golfers.

George Wakaba, David Mbatia, George Yego and Sam Onyambu, with a score of 115 points, finished second, while the team of Simon Onyango, Ronnie Maina, Elijah Wachira and Martha Njama, who had a combined score of 108 points, were third.

Handicap Jerry Okal was the Men’s Category winner on 36 points ahead of handicap 14 Joel Kaindi, who was second, on 36 points.

Jacqueline Mapesa, playing off handicap 30, was the Lady winner on 43 points and handicap 28 Ivy Katee was the runner-up, one point behind.

The top three winning teams now join players who will proceed to the next round of the series, dubbed the “Eagles Round” where they will be aiming to qualify for the Series’ Grand Finale to be played at Karen Country Club in May 2022.

A fully paid trip to the iconic Gleneagles Golf Course in Scotland is up for grabs.

A total of 15 teams have qualified for the next round following previous events at Vet Lab Sports Club, Thika Greens Golf Club, Windsor Golf Club and Nakuru Golf Club.

Focus now shifts to Sigona Golf Club, which will host the sixth leg of the series, on Saturday.

Meanwhile, it was an interesting golf outing as two hole-in-ones were recorded during the ICEA Lion King of the Course, at Machakos Sports Club.

The two aces were sank on the par-three 18th and par-three 11th holes by Faustine Maithya and John Nganga respectively in the tournament graced by a field of 146 golfers.

Apart from acing out the 18th, Maithya also won Nearest to Pin Men prize as it was also being contested on the same hole.

ICEA Lion General Insurance presented the tournament, which is the first in a six-event series that began in Machakos before moving to Thika Greens Golf Resort, Ruiru Sports Club and Nanyuki Sports club.

The tournament will now head to Nandi Bears Club before winding up with a grand finale at Nyali Golf and Country Club.

Handicap 28, Stephen Kisuve topped the winners scroll after carding 20 stableford points.
