Man City could offer Sergio Aguero new contract to extend Etihad stay despite injury

Manchester City have not ruled out handing Sergio Aguero a new contract to keep the Argentine striker at the Etihad until 2022.

Aguero, the club’s record goalscorer, was expected to move back to his boyhood team, Independiente, in Argentina when his current deal expires at the end of next season.

But, although the 32-year-old is once again sidelined, after undergoing a knee operation two weeks ago, he remains City’s master marksman.

Pep Guardiola will be in the market for a new striker once the current campaign ends, but there is a possibility that Aguero will be handed a one-year extension if he continues to score goals next season.

Gabriel Jesus is still to convince Guardiola that he can be the long-term replacement for the Argentine.

The Brazilian is getting an extended run in Guardiola’s team at the present, following Aguero’s latest injury absence.

But, at 23, Jesus must deliver now, as he spearheads City’s quest for Champions League and FA Cup glory.

Aguero, who joined the club in 2011, has scored 23 goals in 32 appearances this season – finding the net once for every 92 minutes he has played.

But his years at the Etihad have also seen regular injury absences.

However, if he returns from his latest surgery firing on all cylinders, then his stay in Manchester could well be extended beyond a decade.
