Manchester United accomplished a Premier League double over Manchester City with goals from Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay giving them a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford on Sunday, March 8.

United were shaky at the start of the game allowing the visitors to possess as they sat deep in their own half. The Red Devils grew slowly into the match and made their presence felt in the midfield collecting almost all the second balls.

United's opening goal was absolute creativity with Bruno Fernandes surprising City's defence with a sharply-taken chipped free-kick over the wall to Anthony Martial, whose low volley surprisingly went past goalkeeper Ederson to give the hosts the lead.

United had to defend for large parts of the second half but were disciplined throughout, maintaining their shape and allowing City to create a few open chances. Red Devil’s head coach Ole Gunner Solskjaer was keen to protect his side’s lead by introducing the defensive pair of Eric Bailly and Scott McTominay to replace tired legs of Brandon Williams and Martial.

The host’s second goal came in the additional minutes of the second half after woeful throw-out from Ederson saw McTominay slot the ball into an open net from 25 metres out.

Odion Ighalo was given his Manchester Derby debut after he came on for Bruno Fernandes in the dying stages of the game.

United fans took to social media to celebrate their win over the Citizens, hailing the impact of the fantastic Fernandes.
