Farmers in Murang'a are being taught how they can rear fish in their water pans.

The new concept targeting farmers in the semi-arid parts of the county are being taken through best farming practises, among them on how to rear fish in their pans.

The farmers in Kigumo and Gatanga subcounties have embraced the concept and have been supplied  with more than a million fingerlings that have been stocked in their pans.

The National Government CDF has partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture to deliver the fingerlings to the farmers who have gone through the basics on fish rearing.

The water pans were dug through facilitation by the National Irrigation Authority (NIA) in the past two years.

In Kigumo constituency, MP Wangari Mwangi distributed the fingerings in Kahumbu ward, where farmers benefitted with the programme.

Mwaniki said there was a need to introduce farmers to fish rearing owing to the increased market opportunities.

"The water in the pans research revealed was enough to facilitate irrigation of kitchen gardens and fish rearing," said the MP.

She added that experts will be visiting the farmers to check on the progress of the investment.

In Ithanga village in Gatanga, 100 farmers received 500 fingerlings, a move designed to assist the locals in good nutrition.

The project will benefit with cooling systems that will be facilitated by CDF  to assist in marketing strategy.

MP Nduati Ngugi said the venture by the government will help reduce importation of fish from outside the country.

"This is a programme that will assist the farmers have access to white meat, and make money through sales," said the MP.

Last year, the Ministry of Agriculture through fisheries department stocked fingerlings in more than 10 dams in Maragua and Gatanga that were rehabilitated through facilitation of the Murang'a County Government.
