An inspector at a tea plantation was struck dead by lightning after he stepped out of a protected collection banda.

"The workers had been directed to shelter in the banda after the Lightning Detection Systems (LDS) indicated there was likelihood of lightning striking the area. However, for some reason, the inspector walked out of the protected area and was struck dead a few metres away," said Unilever Tea Corporate Affairs Director Joseph Mitei.

Meanwhile, a 35-year-old illicit drinks brewer from Chemosot location in Bureti constituency drowned while fleeing from the police. Chemosot location chief Vincent Mutai said the suspect was selling illicit alcohol in an open field when police officers raided the area.

“The suspect slipped and fell into a flooded deep pit as he escaped from the police,” Mutai said.

His body is yet to be recovered.
