This comes a week after a delegation from the county led Executive Committee Member for Lands, Energy, Housing and Urban Management Jennipher Nawoi held talks with Lands Principal Secretary Nicholas Muraguri over the matter.

Lack of issuance of title deeds in the county has hampered land transactions and development.

Ms Nawoi said the meeting resolved to fast track land survey in Lodwar Municipality before extending to eight other locations in the county that have been mapped up to attain the municipality status.

She said the collaboration between the county and state departments in charge of Lands and Urban Management will see the opening of a functional land registry in Lodwar town.

The county executive added that the meeting agreed to include large chunks of land along Lake Turkana in the planning matrix and possible development of urban areas. She noted that though the existing county spatial plan is still in its draft form, the involvement of the national government and other stakeholders in finalizing it is a step in the right direction. 

Turkana County Attorney Erastus Ethekon explained that the proposed physical planning will put into consideration shared community spaces and pastoralism as a predominant way of life among locals.

He noted that the Community Land Act of 2016 has provisions on how to initiate urbanisation of rural areas with minimal interference to pastoralism.

The meeting which also attended by Augustine Masinde, the director for Physical planning touched on a number of issues that will contribute towards unlocking the potential of land as a resource in Turkana County.

Landowners in Turkana hold allotment letters as the only proof of land ownership.
