Traders held over illegal milk imports

Six businessmen were arrested and close to two tonnes of powder milk confiscated in a new crackdown on milk imports.

The six were arrested at three go-downs in Eastleigh Estate on Saturday. Officers from the newly created Anti-vandalism Police unit based at the county police offices have been tasked to nab traders of milk imports.

Officers from the unit said police are targeting traders dealing in imported milk without the authority of the Kenya Dairy Board.

The crackdown is aimed at stopping illicit sale of the powder milk to protect local farmers.

In the Eastleigh raid, police recovered about 500 boxes of powdered milk said to have been imported from Uganda. Last year, the dairy board engaged in a similar crackdown.
