Poultry farmers have been given a boost after the county government embarked on the production of affordable chicken feed. The county government is manufacturing the chicken feeds through Kirinyaga Agricultural Training Centre animal production unit.

According to Governor Anne Waiguru, apart from saving farmers from high production costs, the feeds are also aimed at shielding them from substandard products from unscrupulous dealers which affect the quality of eggs, thereby reducing their marketability.

While launching the one million eggs project, Waiguru said the feeds factory, which is located in Kiaga, plays a major role in the success of the eggs project since the enlisted farmers are guaranteed quality feeds.

“The county government has provided free feed to 32 community groups involved in the first phase of the project which is six months. Thereafter, the farmers will buy the feeds from the factory at a subsidised rate,” Waiguru said.

The current production capacity at the factory is 220 bags of 70kgs each daily and so far the factory has produced around 13,000 bags.
