Agriculture given the bulk of resources in Taita Taveta 2018/2019 budget

The county's department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries got the bulk of allocations shared among dockets in the 2018/19 budget.

According to the county Appropriation Bill that was passed by the County Assembly on Saturday to beat the June 30 deadline, the county administration plans to spend Sh3.69 billion on recurrent expenditure, while Sh1.56 billion will go towards development.

Agriculture share

The Agriculture department has been allocated more than Sh279 million, followed by Public Works, Housing and Infrastructure, which was allocated Sh221 million.

Other departments include Water and Irrigation, which was allocated Sh195 million, Research, Industrialisation, Energy and ICT Sh150 million, Public Service and Administration Sh146 million, Health Services Sh126 million, Education and Libraries Sh110 million and County Assembly Sh105 million.

The office of the governor has been allocated more than Sh57 million, Tourism Sh61 million, Lands, Environment and Natural Resources Sh89.8 million, Mining and Finance departments allocated Sh9.8 million and Sh7 million respectively.

Finance and Planning CEC Vincent Masawi said agriculture was the backbone of county’s economy and that was why it had been allocated enough resources to help improve food security.

The allocation comes at a time the county had been grappling with persistent food shortages and had entirely been dependent on relief supplies from the national Government and donors.

Education Fund

A total Sh150 million was allocated to the Education fund, out of which Sh85 million will go to bursaries, and the rest to scholarships and loans.

Majority Leader Jason Tuja said the House amended the County Education Fund Board Act 2018 to ensure 57 per cent of the education fund was allocated for bursaries.

Under the new Act, the education fund kitty will be shared equally to all 20 electoral wards, with each getting more than Sh4.2 million for bursaries.
