Coffee farming company to explore new venture

Kyanzavi coffee farmers company in Machakos county is geared for additional farming of Macadamia and watermelon, the management has disclosed.

The company's chairman Mr Francis Kalinzoya, said there was enough and fertile land for the extra farming initiative expected to boost the company's earnings.

He said the company had already contracted a qualified managing agency that will collaborate with the existing personnel to make the project a success.

"This will be possible because the company has several permanent dams with enough water for the intended multipurpose irrigation," added Mr Kalinzoya.

The chairman said the 800-acre company owned by more than 1,800 shareholders had properties in Nairobi among them; the Agriculture house at the City centre whose proceeds had been partially utilised to cushion the coffee farming.

He said despite the existing challenges, the company lately has been producing low coffee yields due to poor climatical weather, among many other factors.

The firm had created job opportunities for the locals hence uplifting the area's economy.

Speaking to journalists while inspecting vandalised water pipes and dead coffee trees, the chairman expressed optimism that under the new managing agency contracted last year the old glory of the company will be restored.

"We have taken this new initiative to assist the Government to create more job opportunities and more earnings for the company," he said.

He called upon both country and national governments to intervene and assist the company with subsidized farm inputs to overcome some of the challenges partly attributed by Covid-19.
