Benefits of artificial insemination in livestock

Insemination is the process of collecting male sperms and depositing them manually into the female reproductive system, animalsmart.org artificial states.

Semen is inseminated into the female by placing a portion of it into the cervix or uterus by mechanical methods.

Artificial insemination is now commonly used by most farmers since it comes with a couple of cost-effective benefits.

Here are some artificial insemination benefits.

Increased safety

The procedure is more hygienic and carried out with extra care by skilled and informed personnel compared to natural mating as it can expose your livestock to diseases.

The veterinary officer uses sterilised tools making it more secure.

In most cases during natural mating, farmers look for a breed that is strong to improve their breed. In a scenario where the female is young, injuries and accidents are likely to occur. This happens mostly in cattle as the males picked for mating are very large and aggressive. It possess danger to a farmer who may be controlling the mating process.

This can be prevented by the use of artificial insemination as the chances of serious complications are low.

It is an easy way for a farmer to choose the kind of breed they desire since the vets always have a variety of breeds. This is achieved after the male's sperms have been collected and packaged to several multiple doses that can be distributed to a couple of different vets.

It also saves the cost of keeping a male for the sake of breeding. Transporting a bull in remote areas is expensive and hectic. It increases the rate of conception since natural mating sometimes can be unsuccessful due to timings and a lot of semen can be wasted on a single cow.

Improve livestock breed

A farmer has a chance to choose the kind of breed he/she want hence improving the genes of the livestock.

It increases the quality of livestock breed since before and after semen collection has taken place the herds undergoes maximum examination to ensure the livestock genes collected are of the best quality.

Before the livestock is selected for breeding, progeny testing is done where its genetic information is recorded from the progeny performance. This helps determine the breed value of an animal and it defines which one is best for the process thus improving the stock breed.

Although the process of the breed has demerits that are controllable and the probability of happening is 0.02. It is the best method for commercial livestock.
