American agribusiness and food company Land’O Lakes has entered into a partnership with Kenyan manufacturing giant Bidco Africa Limited to set up a new state-of-the-art manufacturing animal feed plant in Nakuru County.

The factory, which was constructed at a tune of Sh1.2 billion will enable farmers across the country to access high yield feeds for their animals at affordable prices hence boost the productivity of their animals. The animal feed plant has a production capacity of 160,000 metric tonnes per day. The facility was officially opened on Thursday by Mr. Peter Munya, the Cabinet Secretary of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives.

“As the government, we are committed to ensuring that we achieve food security for our people and this kind of joint venture is key since it’s local and international experience coming together to provide high yield feeds to our farmers, which will result in higher productivity,” said Munya.

“This fully automated plant will ensure quality and accuracy in production and reduce the chance of human error. The world-class capabilities will offer Kenyan farmers products designed to help them deliver on quality and performance. Bidco Land’O Lake plant seeks to empower our farmers and agribusinesses with much more competitiveness by increasing the farmers’ outputs and yields so that they are much more viable in their markets. Farmers in Kenya have welcomed zero-grazing and this will also in effect assist in the overall agenda on Climate Change too, “explained Vimal Shah, Chairman, Bidco Africa.

Dave Hoogmoed, the Executive Vice President of Land O’Lakes International explained that “we are excited and proud to open this facility, a strategic move to invest in the East Africa region. In offering our products and services, we will be able to help Kenyan farmers with the latest tools and technology to help advance their livelihoods.”

“As you, all know that animal food production is rapidly moving forward in Kenya and the Bidco Land O’Lakes team is focused and excited to be working with farmers. They are leveraging our company’s experience, knowledge and technology to help farmers optimize production and focus on return-on-investment.”

Hoogmoed added that they plan to introduce four new products; Pro Calf Starter, Pro Heifer Developer, Pig Starter 4-4-4 and Pro Calf Milk Replacer.

“Apart from just offering animal feeds to farmers across the country, we also offer free training to farmers on four key components that help them realize high productivity from their animals. These components are genetics, nutrition, management and health. Kenya has the best dairy animal genetics within the East Africa region and we are now helping farmers adopt the other three components in order to boost their productivity,” explained Hoogmoed.
