Something is definitely amiss at the University of Nairobi.About a week ago, assailants stormed a student leader’s room and attacked him with a knife. Student Organisation of Nairobi University (Sonu) secretary general Alex Matere was left nursing stab wounds after the 3am inicident.
According to witnesses, Matere was attacked by a group of hooded men.
In another incident, a hostel was gutted, in what students claimed was an arson attack. Fifteen rooms were destroyed before firefighters put out the fire.

Some students have speculated that some of their colleagues were behind the incidents. They claimed the attacks have their roots in Sonu wrangles.
Whether this is the case is neither here nor there. But what is not in question is that there is an insecurity problem at the university. Police must act with speed, arrest and prosecute those behind the attack on the student leader and the burning of the hostel.
This is the only way to reassure students and parents that all is well at the institution.
