Day schools mean score in KCSE shoots up

Day schools in Kirinyaga County beat well established institutions, in the just released Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination, (KCSE), results.

St James, Kiaritha Mixed Day Secondary School posted an impressive mean score of 7.323 despite having been established within a former colonial village.

Karaini Mixed Day School, registered an improvement in the mean score from 5.51 in 2013 to 6.2 during the results released on Tuesday, while Kiamichiri Mixed Day School’s mean shot up from 3.6 in 2013 to 5.263.

Some parents interviewed over the performance said the government should pump more resources in day schools to enable students compete favourably with their counterparts in boarding institutions.

’Most of these children in day schools are among very bright ones whose parents could not afford the exorbitant fees charged in boarding schools,’’ said Irene Wanjiru , a parent at Kiaritha.

She complained that day schools lack good facilities especially laboratories.

“Our children do not have science laboratories and this makes them perform poorly,” she said.
