Comedian Mwala freed pending probe into death of pedestrian in road accident

Comedian Davis Mwabili alias Inspekta Mwala has been freed on a Sh40,000 police bond pending his trial for killing a pedestrian in Kilifi on Monday night.

"The accused must appear in court on Friday next week to answer the charge of causing death by dangerous driving," said Rabai Police Chief David Maina.

Police claim that he hit and killed a pedestrian, Samwel Mwaki, 35, on Monday night.

Mwala who, ironically, plays a strict police inspector role in a comical show- Inspekta Mwala found himself on the wrong side of the law.

Police claim the comedian was drunk during the 11.00pm accident as he was driving to Kaloleni from Mazeras.

Maina confirmed Mwabili's arrest on Tuesday.

"We arrested the suspect from the scene to Rabai Police station after rescuing him from the rowdy crowd and we are holding him for investigation," said the OCPD.

Police also allege that the accident occurred when the actor tried to overtake an incoming vehicle and veered off the road, hitting a pedestrian. The actor was alone in the car.

Police said the killer vehicle dragged the pedestrian for about 100 metres, fatally wounding him and crashing his skull, hands and legs before coming to a halt.

Maina told The Standard that upon receiving information of the crash, police rushed to the scene and rescued the actor who was on the verge of being lynched by enraged residents and boda boda riders.

Police fired in the air to scare away the irate motorcycle riders who were baying for the comedian's blood.

The body was moved to Coast General mortuary while the damaged vehicle was towed to Rabai Police station.
